Create Named Ranges in Eagles Tools

The Create Named Ranges group makes it very easy to define named ranges and dynamic named ranges in Excel. Named ranges are one of the crucial tasks for making formulas easier to read, enhancing data management, and simplifying the navigation within your workbook.

Create Named Ranges Explained

1. Named Range

This button automatically creates named ranges based on the first row of the selected columns in your worksheet.

How to Use:

  • When you click, the tool uses the values of the first row in the selected columns as the names of the named ranges.
  • It creates separate named ranges for each column selected.

Example:

  • Select 5 rows of data in columns A, B, and C.
  • Click Named Range.
  • Below named ranges will be created:
    • For Column A: =Sheet1!$A$2:$A$6 (Named based on A1)
    • For Column B: =Sheet1!$B$2:$B$6 (Named based on B1)
    • For Column C: =Sheet1!$C$2:$C$6 (Named based on C1)

Key Points:

  • The first row is used as the name for the range.
  • If a name already exists, a confirmation dialog will prompt to overwrite the existing named range.

2. Dynamic Named Range

This button creates dynamic named ranges that adjust automatically as the data expands or shrinks in your worksheet.

How to Use:

  • Highlight one or more columns for which you want to create a dynamic named range.
  • Click Dynamic Named Range.
  • A popup will appear asking you to enter a name for the dynamic named range.
  • You can manually enter the name or select a cell containing the desired name.
  • If a named range with the same name exists, a confirmation dialog will ask if you want to replace it.
  • A dynamic named range is created for the cells selected.

Example:

  • Select Columns A and B in your sheet.
  • Click Dynamic Named Range.
  • Enter the name “DataRange” in the popup or select a cell containing “DataRange“.
  • The dynamic named range is created which will include data from both the columns (A and B).

Why Use the Create Named Ranges?

  • Named ranges make formulas more interactive and readable (e.g., =SUM(Sales) instead of =SUM(A2:A50)).
  • Dynamic named ranges adjust to new data, eliminating the need for manual updates.
  • Helps avoid mistakes caused by hardcoding ranges in formulas.
  • Saves time compared to manually creating named ranges or dynamic ranges.

Tips for Using Create Named Ranges Effectively

  • Use Clear Names: Choose descriptive names like SalesData or EmployeeList for easier reference.
  • Avoid Duplicates: If prompted to overwrite, ensure you’re not unintentionally replacing an essential named range.
  • Test Dynamic Ranges: After creating a dynamic named range, test it by adding or removing data to confirm proper functionality.
